If you’ve ever struggled with how to explain a lockdown drill to young students without causing worry, this children’s lockdown book was written for you!
This month, I am incredibly honored to share something that has been on my heart for a long time.
In crafting this lockdown book, I aimed to bridge the communication gap between safety protocols and child-friendly language.
After years of walking school hallways, consulting with administrators, training educators, and supporting school resource officers, and nearly 20 years in law enforcement, I have seen firsthand how difficult it can be for educators to explain lockdown procedures to young children in a way that protects their emotional well-being.
I have especially witnessed how heavy this particular conversation has felt in elementary classrooms. Again and again, I watched compassionate educators wrestle with the same question:
How do I explain this in a way that keeps my students safe — without taking away their sense of security?
Too often, the available resources were either overly technical, developmentally inappropriate, or unintentionally anxiety-inducing. There was a clear gap between safety policy and child-centered communication. That gap is what led me to write Lockdown: Our Classroom Drill.
This lockdown book is designed to ensure that young students feel secure during these discussions.
In this age-appropriate children’s lockdown book, kids learn essential safety practices in the best way possible, through interactive storytelling.
The drills are important. The preparation matters. But the conversation has always deserved a gentler approach.
And for all these heartfelt reasons, I’m happy to introduce: Lockdown: Our Classroom Drill.
This book was created to fill a critical gap in safety education for our youngest learners (Pre-K through 3rd grade). It provides a calm, developmentally appropriate way to introduce lockdown drills without fear, without unnecessary detail, and without anxiety. Through simple language and familiar classroom routines, children learn what to do, where to go, and most importantly, that caring adults are there to guide them every step of the way.
By utilizing this lockdown book, teachers can better address safety without inducing fear.
Preparedness can feel steady.
Practice can feel routine.
Safety can be taught with compassion.
Why This Book Is Different
This book was intentionally created for our youngest learners — children in Pre-K through 3rd grade — who experience the world very differently than older students. Early childhood is a time of imagination, trust, and deep attachment to caregivers and teachers. Safety education at this age must be steady, simple, and reassuring.
Rather than focusing on “why” in a way that introduces frightening details, this book focuses on “what we do.” It walks children through:
- Listening to their teacher
- Moving calmly together
- Going to a safe place in the classroom
- Practicing as a team
This lockdown book aligns with best practices in child development and trauma-informed care.
The language is gentle. The tone is calm. The illustrations reflect familiar classroom settings. The message is consistent: trusted adults are in charge, and we practice so we know what to do.
This approach aligns with trauma-informed best practices and child development research. Young children do not need every possible detail. They need clarity, routine, and reassurance.
Rooted in Real-World Experience
Throughout my career, I’ve trained thousands of educators and worked alongside hundreds of schools across New York. I’ve helped districts refine their emergency response plans, conduct site assessments, and strengthen safety systems.
What I learned is this: even the strongest safety plan can create anxiety if it’s not communicated thoughtfully.
Children take emotional cues from the adults around them. When educators feel confident and calm, students feel secure. When the conversation is structured and developmentally appropriate, drills become part of school life — not something mysterious or frightening.
This lockdown book is designed to support that confidence.
It serves as a visual and conversational aid for teachers, school resource officers, counselors, and administrators who want to introduce lockdown drills in a way that protects both physical safety and emotional well-being.
More Than a Book — A Mission
The release of Lockdown: Our Classroom Drill represents more than a publishing milestone. It reflects the broader mission of Level-Up Safety: to bring trauma-informed, human-centered safety resources into schools and communities.
Safety does not have to be delivered through fear.
Preparedness does not require panic.
We can strengthen systems while protecting children’s sense of stability.
This is why this lockdown book is crucial for educators aiming to create a safe environment.
For educators, this book can be used:
- Prior to a scheduled drill
- As part of a classroom discussion on safety routines
- During staff collaboration with school resource officers
- As a supportive tool for communicating with families
For administrators, it provides a consistent, reassuring framework for early elementary classrooms. For school resource officers, it offers language that aligns enforcement with empathy.
This lockdown book serves as a wonderful new resource for SRO’s looking for a book to read to kids in their school to help build stronger bonds and connect to their school culture.
A Resource for the Adults Who Care

Together, we can ensure that this lockdown book becomes a staple in our educational resources to support teachers in doing their work with clarity and compassion.
