The leaves are crunching, the coffee mugs are bigger, and students are already talking about snow days (sorry, it’s coming!). With a quarter of the school year behind us, this is the ideal moment to pause, reflect, and give your classroom and building safety practices a seasonal refresh.

Classroom & Building Touchpoints:

Drill Cadence

  • By now, most schools have completed several fire and lockdown drills. New York State requires 8 evacuation drills and 4 lockdown drills each year, with at least 8 drills done before December 31. If your building is behind schedule, expect a “drill blitz” before winter break — make sure your students know what to do without feeling anxious.

Seasonal Hazards

  • Coats, boots, and sports equipment are piling up. Remind students to keep items stored neatly so aisles and exits stay clear. Tripping hazards love to hide under winter jackets.

Heating & Ventilation

  • As the HVAC shifts to heating mode, check vents and radiators. Nothing flammable (or melty!) should be on or near them. Good airflow also helps reduce germs — a win during cold and flu season.

Technology & Power

  • Shorter days mean more reliance on indoor lighting and devices. Double-check surge protectors, replace flickering bulbs, and make sure emergency lighting hasn’t been accidentally blocked by seasonal décor.

Student Wellbeing

  • The “October slump” is real — fatigue, stress, and social tension tend to peak around this time. A quick kindness campaign, mindfulness activity, or class meeting on “supporting each other” can go a long way toward boosting morale and safety.
